The quilt making process

Step 1

The Idea: I look for colours, textures, and shapes inspired by what’s around me—nature especially gardens, my neighborhood in the East End, and the Ontario countryside.

Step 2

The Design: I gather my fabrics and sketch out a rough layout, playing with the colours and scale until I’m ready to construct the first quilt block.

Step 3

The Sewing: I make a few more blocks to see how the pieces fit together, deciding on the final arrangement as the overall pattern begins to take shape.

Step 4

The Layering: Once the top is sewn together, I layer it with cotton batting and a fabric backing to form the "quilt sandwich"—it’s where the piece finally starts to feel like a blanket.

Step 5

The Quilting: Seeing how everything looks at this stage, I decide on the quilting pattern; I hand-stitch the entire piece to pull the three layers together, adding the texture and structure that holds it all in place.

Step 6

The Binding: I finish by hand-stitching the binding around the edges, a final detail that makes the quilt durable and ready for years of use.
